In a 2012 Kimberly-Clark Professional study, researchers swabbed 4,800 surfaces in office buildings that house about 3,000 employees overall. The swabs were then tested with a device that measures adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is a molecule typically found in animals, bacteria, and mold cells.
The higher the ATP levels of a surface are, the more potential that surface has to support microbial growth. Specifically, when the device reads an ATP count of 300 or more, a surface is “officially dirty” and is in need of a good cleaning.
The results of the swab test revealed that the following office surfaces have high levels of contamination (an ATP count of 300 or higher):
- 75 percent of break room sink faucet handles
- 48 percent of microwave door handles
- 27 percent of keyboards
- 26 percent of refrigerator door handles
- 23 percent of water fountain buttons
- 21 percent of vending machine buttons
According to the study’s consultant, Dr. Charles Gerba of the University of Arizona, people are aware of the risk of germs in places like the bathroom, but areas like the break room do not get the same attention.
While it’s impossible to avoid germs entirely, getting professional commercial services for your LA office and encouraging hygienic practices go a long way toward a cleaner working environment. Consider the following tips:
1. The use of disinfectant solution to clean desks and keyboards
Employees eat snacks and put different things from different places on their desks. What’s more, their hands, which touch a hundred different surfaces every day, are likely on top of the desk or typing away on their keyboard most of the time, making these surfaces hotbeds for germs.
Simply wiping these surfaces with a damp cloth isn’t enough and will only serve to spread the germs elsewhere. Make sure that desks and keyboards are thoroughly cleaned by using a disinfectant solution every day, ideally before the start of the workday and before they leave.
2. The use of hand sanitizer by every employee
While washing with soap and water is the more effective way of keeping hands clean, you can’t expect employees to do it every time the touch something. Using a hand sanitizer is a great alternative because a bottle of it can be carried anywhere and won’t take up too much space on a desk. The alcohol that the gel contains immediately and effectively kills bacteria and most viruses, so in one squeeze, employees’ hands are disinfected right away.
To further encourage the habit of using hand sanitizers, you might want to provide supplies of hand sanitizers in the break room where there are numerous surfaces that are highly contaminated with bacteria.
